Girls tennis clinches 5th straight region championship

The Chapman girls tennis team continues to dominate the court with a fifth straight region championship.

The Lady Panthers stayed undefeated in the regular season once again, and a 6-0 shutout Thursday night against Broome sealed the region title.

Tennis coach Mark Lansing believes that the key to the Lady Panthers’ success has been the overall strength and consistency of the team each time they walk out onto the court.

“We just have a very strong, consistent team that matches up well against our opponents,” Lansing said.

Junior Madeleine Williams, one of the team’s three returners, says that the family-like atmosphere has allowed everyone to give both support and challenges when needed.

“I think that the key to our team’s success was our ability to come together and lean on one another,” Williams said. “The tennis team has always been like another family and we are able to support and challenge one another.”

Junior Khrystyna Boyko echoed Williams’ opinion. Boyko is one of many new faces on the team this year and appreciated how the players welcomed one another and seamlessly united as one team.

“The key to the team’s success this year was the feeling of a family, how all the girls came in and there was just a sense of union,” Boyko said. “We are all just helping each other and working together and building each other up as a team.”

Even though there are many players this year who are new to Chapman tennis, they are not new to the sport itself and have done their part to bring home wins. Lansing says that three of the seven starters are first-year Chapman players, but they all hold winning records at their positions.

“All of our new players have contributed,” Lansing said.

As the Lady Panthers prepare for the playoffs, they want to remember what really matters when it’s all said and done. Williams explains that the team wants to perform to the best of their abilities, but they also want to keep it fun and enjoy the present moment.

“My focus going into playoffs is to do my best and have fun,” Williams said. “At the end of the day, I think as long as we do our best and have fun is all that matters.”

Boyko shares this goal and believes that the environment of the team has helped to make this possible.

“My favorite part was going to this team, feeling the hospitality, the love that everybody showed,” Boyko said. “I think that growing as a team really inspired everyone to be the better version of themselves.”

As for the team’s overall goal, it still has not changed, according to Lansing.

“Obviously we want to win Upper State again and we want to be as competitive as we can when we get to the state tournament,” Lansing said. “We want to win (state). We’ve done really well, and I think we’re ready to go.”
