What F.A.R. is doing for Black History Month

February first through March first is Black History Month. It began in 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, and it is celebrated every year by the US, UK, and Canada. This year is no different at Chapman High School.

This February, Friends Against Racism (F.A.R.) plans to go all out.

“We are planning on doing a trivia day in the library,” Calista Landrum, a student on the committee said. “Questions on Black history month trivia, normalizing things people should already know.”

As usual, they have posters of African American figures hung up near the cafeteria. There will also be a game night, which will feature traditional African American games.

The committee working on this is made up of students and basketball coach Leslie Boyd. They also worked on Hispanic heritage month back in September.

FAR’s primary goal is to promote diversity and inclusion.

“I want to spread the word about diversity.” senior Nigel Pate said. Pate is also on the committee and is excited to see what students and teachers learn from this.

“I want everyone to come together and enjoy others’ culture,” Landrum said. “It doesn’t have to be this is your culture, only your culture, everyone can celebrate it.”

Black history month is important for everyone to celebrate. It brings people together no matter what ethnicity they are. Landrum and the committee are working hard and are excited to see how everyone comes together.

“It’s important for other people to know our history, as well as to be able to embrace themselves,” Landrum said.
