Chapman donates canned food to help the hungry

“A pie in the face is no way to welcome the new assistant principal.”

At least, that’s according to the new assistant principal, Amy Walker.

Unfortunately for her, it’s looking like that’s exactly how she will be welcomed to Chapman.

Walker, who’s representing the University of South Carolina in Chapman’s Clemson versus Carolina canned food drive, is headed toward a tasty finish as the food drive begins to wrap up.

Assistant Principal Ricky Pace represents Clemson.

Spartanburg District 1 made a request for not only Interact Club but also all students and faculty
to try to help the local food banks to provide families with food for the holidays.

Wanting to make it fun for everyone, Interact Club Sponsor Amy Ballentine and Youth Council
Sponsor Casey Nunnemaker came together and got the idea of the Clemson versus
Carolina Pie Challenge.

While Carolina kicked off the competition in lead, Clemson has caught up and is reported to be in the lead by over 100 cans.

A display has been placed in the cafeteria showing the leaders of each hall. There will be a winner for each hall, and there will be prizes for each. Out of the winners, the leaders will be given a biscuit breakfast, and the three others will be given honey buns.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             While this competition has shown to be fun for our students, the sole purpose of it remains to be shown.

“I love helping people, being able to do things for other people and helping students see that they matter to the other people around them and this is a good way to do that,” Ballentine said.

“From helping out in the canned food drive I’ve learned not to take food for granted,” Interact Club President Berenice Rabadon. “I also have gotten the chance to see how Chapman is. Many people don’t see behind the scenes but a lot of help is going into this canned food drive as in a lot of people put in time to bring in their money and/or cans.”

The food drive ends Nov. 18, meaning it’s almost time for a pie in the face.

“Whoever ends up with a pie in the face has every right to be proud for having to help the cause,” Ballentine said.

So who are you rooting for?
