Boys volleyball at Chapman?

Junior Josh Moss and freshman Briggs LeCroy are determined to bring boys volleyball to Chapman.

This isn’t coming easily, though.

For years, volleyball has been viewed as all or majority-female-led. This causes many other boys to be weary when considering joining the sport. However, there has been an increase in male participation by 15% since 2008.

LeCroy and Moss have been searching for students showing interest.

“We’re trying to get a paper or Google Form sent out to the school to get names,” Moss said. “After that, we are seeing if we can get a meeting during Flex Time to see how many we really have.”

The search has proven dry so far. More boys will need to express interest for this dream to become a reality, according to Athletic Director Greg Wilson.

“There need to be 12 to 15 kids interested to even talk any further,” he said. “That’s the biggest challenge.”

Another challenge is the availability of practice space.

Schools that have a boys volleyball team commonly play in the fall, which is also the season when girls volleyball and cheerleading are using the available practice facilities.

LeCroy has tried to come up with alternatives.

“We could split off the main gym,” he said. “I don’t know about using Mabry.”

Students who are interested in helping create a boys volleyball team should reach out to LeCroy or Moss for more information.
