Chapman students say yes to promposals
Getting a date for prom isn’t as easy as it used to be.
Rather than merely asking someone to attend prom, students propose to others with a promposal.
“I think they became popular after a character from the reality show ‘The Hills’ received a promposal and at the time almost every teenage girl wanted their lives like the characters lives from ‘The Hills,’” Media Center Assistant Alissa Fiorillo said.
In 2007, a New York high school student received a three-day suspension for his promposal, but the scenario sparked public interest.
For some students, promposals are a fun new approach to asking someone out.
“I would define a promposal as a funny and cheesy way to ask a girl to prom,” senior Timothy Beach said.
Some think promposals are not a necessary component of prom.
“I think they are sweet, but I don’t think a girl should expect it and only accept a prom invitation if a guy that has gone out of his way to ask her in a promposal way,” Assistant Principal Amy Walker said.
Fiorillo agrees.
“Promposals can be cute when there is creativity and thought put into them,” Fiorillo said. “I hate to think that so many students feel like an elaborate promposal is necessary.”
Many of the guys try to ask the girl in a way that is closely related to their relationship.
“I asked Lauren (Grigg) after a baseball game with a sign (that said ‘Can i steal you for prom?’) and flowers,” junior Luke Cothran said.
“My promposal was a scavenger hunt, and he hid the easter eggs at every place we went together. (i.e. first date, etc.),” senior Simran Hicks said.
Hicks said that the promposal does not have to be large to be special
“It doesn’t have to be some huge gesture but just something small can go a long way,” she said.
