The problem with unequal pay
On Wednesday, March 30, 2016, a federal complaint was filed by the U.S. national women’s soccer team saying they are unhappy with their pay. It was filed by player Hope Solo and four of her teammates.
These players feel that they deserve just as much pay as the men’s national soccer team.
I completely support the idea of equal wages for women. Why shouldn’t women get equal pay?
When asked by reporters if women should receive equal pay, presidential candidate Donald Trump said, “You’re going to make the same if you do as good a job.”
Solo retaliated by telling reporters that “We’ve brought in almost $20 million in revenue, while the men’s team has lost $2 million”.
Today, the men’s team makes about four times more than the women’s team.
No matter the category, it is shown around the nation that women are paid less than men. April 12 is known nationally as equal pay day. This is when women earn the same amount of money in the fiscal year as men did by Dec. 31.
Women who play in the WNBA make about a little less than a third of the league’s earnings. Players of the NBA make half.
The statistics support the idea that women are paid unfairly in comparison to men. For example, in 2015, women made 79 cents to men’s dollar. Why is there such a gap?
Some say that women are paid less than men because their outside of work activities cause them not to have jobs that would pay as much. However, this is not the case for most women athletes who are paid less than the men athletes.
President Obama is making a policy where more than 100 employees will report their pay. I believe making this information public will help decrease the wage gap, but it may take a couple of years before there is real equality for men and women’s pay.
