Standing up for the national anthem

For decades, athletes all over the country have stood up when the national anthem comes on in the stadium.

But this time it was different.

On Aug, 26, 2016, Kaepernick chose to remain seating for the playing of the national anthem, which sparked some major controversy.

Word of his actions went to national news in mere seconds, but the famed quarterback had no regrets for what he did.

Many people had different opinions on what he did, but for the most part, people were outraged.

Jerseys were burned, death threats were sent, and social media exploded with hatred for Kaepernick.

“I’m not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick stated in a later interview.

Whether you agree with what he did or not, you have to ask yourself if he was truly in the wrong.

Some people say that he is just exercising his right of free speech. But could he have chosen a different route for speaking out against something?

But Kaepernick continued to remain sitting for four games in a row, and one of his teammates even joined him.

Their protests have definitely opened up many conversations on the rights of free speech, with some people even wanting it to be required to stand up when the national anthem is played.

Beside the fact of his views on police brutality or racial oppression, it is more of a respect factor, in my opinion. Respect the country that gave you the opportunity to play professional sports and make a substantial amount of money playing the game that you adore.

That is the only thing that I have an issue with, but will he continue to protest before every event?

I guess you could say he stands up for what he believes in.
