You’re in a class you must take to graduate but already know the material. The teacher forces you to be the teaching aid and help the other students who are struggling with the material.
Students who are bilingual shouldn’t be required to take a foreign language class.
We have had several non-English speakers at Chapman for the past few years. We currently have a teacher to help the students but don’t have a class to teach them English.
Most Ukrainian students at our school speak at least two languages — Ukrainian and English and some have Russian as an additional language. The majority know how to read and write in one of the languages.
Most Hispanic students speak Spanish at home. Having them learn Spanish in a class wouldn’t make sense for them to relearn a language they already speak.
One quality that is useful for Hispanic students taking Spanish is most don’t know how to write in Spanish so it could help improve their writing and grammar skills.
To fix this problem, we should have a class for native speakers of Spanish or Ukrainian and have them learn grammar, and writing like we have with English. They could hire teachers who are fluent in the language and help them with grammar and reading.
We could also make it so they can take it as a dual credit or AP so the students can get a GPA boost.
