Our lunchtime is 30 minutes long while other schools have lunch for at least an hour. Our lunchtime allows us to relax and debrief our last two class periods. Lunchtime also enables us to catch up with friends or if we need to, get our work done last minute.
Even though we have two separate lunch lines, it still takes quite a long time to get through and sit down and eat.
By the time you get through the line, there are maybe 20 minutes left to eat. Teenagers should be eating between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. because our metabolism peaks at those times.
Even adding just an extra ten minutes can be very beneficial to students’ lives.
We need more time to ourselves because we already have to sit in class learning for 1 hour and 45 minutes every class with very little free time during the day.
Feeling rushed and not having time to prepare food can end up with students eating food that isn’t very healthy.
Eating healthy foods can enhance your cognitive skills like, concentration and memory and faster memory information processing. According to CDC Healthy Schools, “42% of US high school students with mostly A’s ate breakfast on all seven days, (during the seven days before the survey) compared to 20% of students with mostly D/F’s.”
Unhealthy behaviors can have a negative effect on education outcomes.
Students who do sports also need to be able to eat healthy foods, because this can improve their energy levels, promote muscle growth and reduce the risk of injury.
So to be able to achieve these things more lunchtime might be the solution.
Our lunchtime can feel very stressful because there are only a few options for lunch. You can bring a lunch, which can be hard to do when you might be rushed in the morning. The next best option is you can take the lunch line which as we all know can take a bit to get through, or you can just choose to not eat.
All of these options can have a negative effect especially if you decide not to eat.
