There have been multiple situations where students ask to go to the bathroom and are told no. Regardless of the concerns about abusing the privilege and disrupting the class, this could be harmful to the students being able to concentrate and learn.
Students should be able to feel respected and trusted by their teachers. The refusal to allow bathroom breaks when needed could increase stress, anxiety, a lack of engagement in the classroom, etc.
Teachers can implant rules such as accountability and trust in their students. When a teacher denies a bathroom request, this could create an environment where dishonest and disrespectful behavior develops. When a student feels like they need to lie for a reason to go to the restroom, this could decrease the trust between both the teacher and the student.
In class, teachers could communicate with students about reasonable times for bathroom breaks. Teaching this to students can help them manage their time wisely.
According to TheAtlantic.com, “88 percent said they encourage their students to hold their pee; 36 percent of participants indicated they had a ‘protocol in place’ to encourage students not to use the bathroom during class time.” Teachers should respect their students and prioritize their physical health.
By granting students access to regularly use the restroom, this allows the students to reduce the chance of developing infections and health problems, such as stomach aches and bladder problems.
By demonstrating empathy and responsibility, students will feel more comfortable being in a learning environment.
