I know many students have complained that some of the classes they take in school are not helping them learn how to fully face life on their own.
I am one of those students.
No offense to a class like calculus, but not all of us will need to use a complex formula in real life.
We need people that have basic home skills just as much as people who can do calculus.
I suggest that Chapman should bring back a home economics class.
Our school used to offer classes like Parenthood and Foods.
However, like most schools, they discontinued the classes because home economics is viewed as “housewives’ work.”
Also, not enough students were enrolled, as well as not enough certified teachers to teach the classes.
Many people think that home economics will only teach you how to cook and sew.
But those are not the only skills you would learn.
Home Economics is like Parenthood, Foods and more mashed together into one.
I come from a family that knows you need to be able to care for yourself and others, like family.
A class like this would teach students valuable life skills, like how to live a healthy lifestyle.
Most students are going to live life without their parents’ supervision.
You will need to be able to make your own healthy meal, and will learn, especially after learning about nutrition.
It will be important to know how to deal with your money wisely.
For example managing checking accounts and budgeting.
Learning about family development and parenting will play a part in building better relationships and generations.
Results from this class will not only teach a number of life skills but also help students to become more independent.
Home Economics can help advance students’ problem solving for life, not only in the “math” way.
Chapman administration should consider redeveloping and offering these classes to all grades.
