Rethinking homecoming sponsors

Kyle Wilson

Every year high schools around the US prepare for a major event for seniors. The girls and boys all prepare to wear their best and try to get votes from their fellow classmates. This is the event known as homecoming.

Homecoming has been around since 1911 and it has been a staple ever since for high school seniors. The tradition has always been that a girl running for homecoming queen must be sponsored by a varsity football player to be in the Homecoming Court.

The tradition, while common, has become outdated and seems unfair for other sports. Football is not the only high school sport, and other sports should be allowed to sponsor.

Homecoming is an event such as prom or a spring formal that students look forward to their senior year, but with only football players allowed to sponsor this limits both athletes able to sponsor and girls who want to run for queen.

The schools should allow other varsity athletes to sponsor because they have been able to be a top athlete in their sport. Let other sports have the opportunity to represent their school in homecoming.

One solution would be to have more than one homecoming. Schools could do fall, winter and spring homecoming. This would allow more girls the ability to run for homecoming queen and would let all athletes to be a part of the homecoming experience.

Homecoming is a experience for all seniors; we shouldn’t let it be just for a certain group of people.
