This school year English teacher Cassey McKowntook the responsibility of leading what was formerly known as F.A.R., which stood for Friends Against Racism and renamed the club Diversity Council (D.C.).
She now leads the group with English teacher Susan Hall, who helped with F.A.R. in previous years.
“Hall and I wanted to change the name to something that didn’t just signify race,” McKown said.We wanted to include people with disabilities as well.”
Hall and McKown plan on doing lots of things with D.C. such as taking field trips to different buildings, hearing from speakers, strengthening ties with the community and unifying the whole school through different activities.
“I hope that we will be able to celebrate all heritage and history months and we grow in numbers throughout the years,” McKon said.
With Hispanic Heritage Month approaching, McKown has a lot planned for club members to celebrate the culture.
“We are putting up posters to represent significant Hispanic people, we’re playing Hispanic bingo and trying to sell some Hispanic foods,”Mckown said.
The club has a decent amount of student members, most of them being former F.A.R. members but are always welcoming any and all people interested. The club members meet weekly during Flex Time on Fridays.
“People should join the Diversity Council to meet new people (and) develop leadership skills, and it’s also a great opportunity to expand on your cultural knowledge and just to get more involved in the school in general,” McKown said. “We want to make students feel like they are making an impact and that the group that’s in D.C is a group of leaders.”
