Chapman girls golf team plays in state tournament
The Chapman girls golf team is participating in the state championship on Oct. 24-25. The championship is held at Carolina Springs golf course in Greenville.
There are six girls from the Chapman team playing in the championships. Kirby Brown, Sierra Vincent, Audrey Foster, Hannah Hughes, Bailey Condrey, and Grace Strawbridge as the alternate.
To qualify for state, teams must shoot a 425 or better. The Chapman team was one of twelve teams to qualify shooting a 394. Ten teams from the upstate qualified and seven from the lower.
“To win state we would all probably have to break 90,” sophomore Kirby Brown said. “I don’t expect to be in the top 10, but I think we can be in the top 15 or 20.”
“I’m a little nervous but excited. I think the most challenging thing will be playing on a new course that I’ve never seen before,” sophomore Bailey Condrey said.
This year the qualification for state was different than it has been. Since a lot of schools from local districts have moved up to being 4A schools, the athletic directors from local school districts had to adjust the requirements to qualify.
“We had to make the state tournament a combination of all 1A through 3A schools and take any team that shoots 425,” Athletic Director Greg Wilson said.
