Athletics work to accommodate schools affected by Matthew
Hurricane Matthew caused massive power outages and flooding in coastal cities such as Beaufort and Charleston. These power outages led to schools being closed, which has led to athletic events being postponed.
Football playoffs have been moved from Nov. 5 to Nov. 18, and tennis and volleyball playoffs will begin on Oct. 26.
Sports such as basketball and wrestling will be without a few athletes as their seasons begin.
“The athletes will have a late start coming to their sports,” Athletic Director Greg Wilson said.
The wait for games is long and grueling for both coaches and players.
“The wait is like training for a bowl game,” Wilson said.
“We have been practicing for a week and a half instead of actual play,” volleyball coach Jennifer Allen said. “We added a quad match to fill the schedule so we could play.”
Even though the storm has negative effects on sports, the coaches agree that it helps the lower part of the state.
“I think for letting them get their feet back under them was a good idea,” Allen said.
“Our number one priority is to accommodate the lower schools who have been impacted by the hurricane,” Wilson said.
