Chapman sports change schedules to accommodate state championship

On Friday night, Inman celebrated a victory at Newberry. The Chapman Panther football team is on their way to the state game in Columbia at the Williams-Brice Stadium.

Everyone is excited for the team and their chance to bring home a state title. However, some athletic events have had to be rescheduled for the other sports teams at Chapman for the football teams opportunity at state.

The JV basketball teams have not been majorly affected, but the girls team has cancelled their tournament Saturday so that they could go support the football players at state.

“We wanted to give the basketball players and their families a chance to show their support,” head varsity coach Leslie Boyd said. “We also didn’t think it would be fair to ask the player to focus on a tournament when they are eager to see the outcome of the state football game.”

Coaches are taking the opportunity of some changed schedules to improve their teams.

“It gives us more time to improve, and because some of the variety is still in football, it gives some of the JV’s a chance to compete at the varsity level,” coach Dustin Batson said.

All of the coaches and teams are excited to show their support to the team. Most coaches are fairly unbothered by and rescheduling that could occur they just want the football team to be successful. “We’re just glad they get the opportunity and hope they succeed.”

Athletic Director and varsity boys basketball coach Greg Wilson is willing to accommodate all the teams for their seasons.

“Our philosophy is that the team that is in season is top priority for multi sport athletes. With football having such a great run, we adjust the schedule to accommodate them, and all of the coaches work very well together adjusting the schedules,” Wilson said.

Even though he is excited for the upcoming basketball season, Wilson is willing to wait to see the football players succeed.

“I am excited to have the rest of my team so that we can practice and prepare, but we all want the football team to be successful so we can work around it,” Wilson said.
