Chapman varsity boys basketball off to a strong start

The season so far for the Chapman varsity boys basketball team has been a success. The team is so far 10-3 on the season, and its scoring has been a big part of it.

They are 4-0 in the region right now, beating out Woodruff, Newberry, Mid Carolina and Clinton.

The winning hasn’t been taken over mostly by just one player though.

“We don’t have necessarily a best player, but we have some guys playing really well, like Stan (Ashmore), Tyrell (Ogelsby), Shaundre (Miller) and Petie (Carter),” assistant coach Kendall McCarter said. “Tyrell’s a solid overall player he defends well and he shoots well. Stan knocks down three pointers, hustles (and) plays defense and Shaundre is a good defender and shot maker.”

Oglesby, the senior guard who suffered a ankle injury that left him on the sidelined for one game, is having a strong season. His injury didn’t keep him down though; when he returned against Newberry, he scored 50 points and ended the game on two game-winning free throws. He is on the season is averaging 28 points 6 assists 5 rebounds and 5 steals.

Two other teammates recognize his talents openly. Senior guard Shy-King Johnson said Oglesby has the best chance to be a collegiate player.

“He is a student of the game and he knows the game of basketball better than anyone on the team,” Johnson said.

He may have a familiar teammate playing alongside him in college. Senior guard Radarius Carter mentions that he would love to play at the next level with him.

“We’ve built chemistry the last four years, you know? He’s like my brother,” Carter said.

McCarter said that watching Ashmore play reminds him of an NBA legend.

“I would say Stan Ashmore reminds me of Kurt Rambis of the 80’s.” McCarter said. “He does all the dirty things for us, he hustles for rebounds, dives on the ground for loose balls.”

Carter said Ashmore is the hardest worker at practice, with internal motivation and the will to win.

Chapman plays Woodruff Friday night.
