In the fall semester of my freshman year, I was taking Intro to Journalism.
It was 2020, the COVID-19 year, so everything was plexiglass and masks. Due to the A and B schedule, we only had time to learn about the yearbook side of journalism. Despite only being able to practice yearbook skills, the following semester I was placed into a newspaper and broadcasting class.
I had no idea what it was, and I had no clue the effect this one class would have on my life.
My first semester on The Prowl I was quite shy and always hiding behind my books and plexiglass. I quickly learned that a major part of the newspaper was going out on interviews and talking to new people which was not one of my strengths.
However, with the help of one specific staff member, I didn’t have to go on any interviews alone until I was confident enough to which wasn’t until a year later. Being a member of this staff built my self-esteem and gave me confidence I wouldn’t otherwise have, and I could not be more thankful.
I have been on this staff for a total of 6 semesters. I spent my freshman year as a staff writer, my sophomore year we began building a social media presence (I was promoted to social media manager), my junior year I got the title of managing editor, and my senior year I was promoted to editor. I am thrilled to have gotten the opportunity to not only be a member of this staff but to play so many different roles.
Inside of classroom 325 is a safe space. The newspaper staff is a judgment-free group. Dr. Timmons is a supportive, encouraging teacher and mentor. Anyone would be lucky to be a member of this staff and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have gotten the time I have with these people and in this classroom.
If you enjoy writing or want to improve your writing skills then this is the place for you. If you want to build your confidence and people skills then this is the place. If you enjoy photography or video editing then this is the place for you. If you prefer to be in the spotlight in front of the camera, this is the place for you. The staff has something for everybody, a place for everyone. When you join the newspaper your not only becoming a member of the staff but a member of this family: The Prowl family.
Speaking from experience, there is nothing better than being a member of this family.
