Students consider the benefits of more arts funding

Chapman has a strong fine arts program. Theatre, art, band, chorus and orchestra are the main ones to name and each class has a strong a devoted community.

But some people believe that the arts should receive more focus.

Junior art student Chris Duncan said more arts courses should be offered. In addition, he said he would like to see the arts receiving more funding.

“They seem very underfunded, and that leads to no good equipment to work with,” he said. “It seems like I see the theatre people out at McDonalds every Saturday trying to raise money for themselves. More time should be spent into recognizing the arts for what they are and what they can be, and a bigger budget is really needed for them.”

Sophomore Emily Rose said that although she feels like the school does offer something for everyone, she would like to see photography courses offered.

“I feel like the basics are taught in yearbook but there is more to be explored and to be done in (photography),” she said.

Sophomore art student Alana Fishtorn wishes the school would emphasize arts in order to make students more passionate.

“I believe that Chapman could improve on our arts program by giving our fine arts students more opportunities to share their passions,” she said.
