Students share thoughts about adding new clubs
Although Chapman offers a variety of extracurricular activities, some students say that they would like to see more clubs offered. Chapman currently offers clubs such as Spanish Club and Beta Club, but other schools offer more opportunities for student enjoyment. Some of these clubs include debate clubs, dance groups, computer clubs, ping pong clubs and skating clubs.
Students have the ability to propose clubs they would like to see. Principal Ty Dawkins says the process begins with finding a sponsor.
“First, you have to find a sponsor,” he said. “That way, you have adult support and someone who will fund it.”
After that, the student needs to write a justification for the club as well as an end goal.
“You’ll need to explain if you’ll have service projects or fundraisers,” Dawkins said.
Some students have ideas of what clubs they would like to see. Freshman Hallie Ridings would like to see more creative offerings.
“Creative writing would be a great club to add, or another art program,” she said.
Sophomore LeeAnna Fullenwinder would like to see a cooking club or a adventure club.
“The cooking club will give students a chance to learn how prepare their own healthy food and an adventure club so we can be taken to a lot of unique places, based on the school’s approval,” Fullenwinder said.
Fullenwinder also said she would like to see a dance club.
there are a lot of talented dancers in the school, but some are too shy to show it,” she said.
Junior Dorian Smith has a few ideas as well, suggesting the school add a chess club, a ping pong club, a superhero club, a gaming club and a martial arts club. He is not alone on some of those. He mentions clubs for ping pong, superheroes, chess, gaming and a kung fu class.
Senior Marcus Wright would also like to see a chess club.
“I don’t really play, but it’s an interesting game and I think a lot of people would jump on that club,” Wright said.
Junior AJ Smith agrees with the idea of having opportunities for students to play video games, although the club might not meet regularly.
“I think we should have (an NBA) 2K tournament and have a prize,” he said. “It’s not a club, but it’s something fun to do and we can do it once a month or every other month.”
