On Feb. 28, Chapman will be hosting the first Black History Month program at 10:30 a.m.
There will be a guest speaker — current Miss South Carolina Jada Samuel — art displays, club participation and fine arts performances.
This all started with Principal Matt Davis asking special education teacher Sundra Proctor-Smith to help with the program.
“She’s very motivated and she gets stuff done,” Davis said.
Proctor-Smith quickly agreed to lend a hand in this important task.
“I told him I would be happy to assist with this task,” Proctor-Smith said.
Proctor-Smith has been working tirelessly to make this program the best it can be along with Cassey McKown, the Diversity Council leader.
The overall goal of this program is to educate and inform students about African American history and its importance.
“This program is meant to celebrate Black History Month. We want the student body to be as engaged as possible,” McKown said.
Proctor-Smith hopes that students take away the importance of Black History.
”Black history is everyone’s history and so it’s important for all of us to know it, embrace it, and appreciate it,” she said.
