Flex Time at Chapman has been a work in progress for a long time. We should be able to use Flex Time to the full extent and go wherever we want as we have before.
The administration has tried many different techniques to manage Flex Time.
We’ve been able to have free range of the school during Flex, we’ve had to have a pass to move around, and we’ve also been restricted and unable to go anywhere.
Understandably, the administration has been struggling to find a happy medium on Flex Time rules. It’s hard to keep track of over a thousand students when we’re freely roaming the building, especially considering the vaping issues and occasional fights.
Although it may be difficult to keep track of everyone, we should be able to use Flex Time how we want to.
Because the large areas like the cafeteria and gym are not open, teachers can’t send their students out to host club meetings in their rooms.
We also only have five minutes between classes, so we are unable to socialize during that time. Many students also can’t socialize with who they want at lunch because we can’t pick our lunches.
Flex is a perfect time for socialization if we don’t need help from teachers because it’s essential to socialize at this age.
But because Flex is so restricted now, we can’t use it to socialize, and we can’t use it to get help from teachers unless it’s planned out before.
Classes are already so long that it feels very unreasonable to keep us here for an extra 25 minutes and not allow us to leave campus or move around campus.
However, according to Principal Matt Davis, new Flex Times ideas are in the works.
A big problem with having students freely roam the school is that the common areas often get too full, which gives the teachers a hard time keeping everyone in line. To fix this, Davis hopes to possibly construct a new outdoor area for students to spend their time because our student body is only getting bigger.
But in the meantime, we should still have a real Flex Time where we can do what we want and go where we need to go.
