Reviewing and analyzing the NFL draft
April 27 was day one of the 2017 NFL draft. Draft day is a time where a franchise can evoke new life into their team and expand the talents of their team.
With this year’s defensive line talent, it’s a spot that was highly touted, especially in the first round.
All of the defensive line craze began with the Cleveland Browns, who held the number one pick. With this pick the team selected Myles Garrett from Texas A&M. He’s a player that possess superb physical talent, running a 4.6 forty yard dash and having a 41 inch vertical, all while while being 6’5”, 270 lbs.
All of the physical attributes with his great on the field play, especially pass rushing, he was almost a lock on everyone’s draft board.
Another guy the Browns were interested in was Mitchell Trubisky from North Carolina. Trubisky received praise later in the draft process and was rumored to be drafted by Cleveland at number one or twelve, along with possibly being picked by San Francisco, or Houston.
Well, one team surprised everyone and moved up to happily get him. The Chicago Bears trade their third pick, and three future mid-round picks to take the 49ers’ 2nd pick to select Trubisky.
Many have a problem with this pick for multiple reasons. First of all, the Bears traded up just one spot when the 49ers weren’t even expected to pick him, and they gave them three mid round picks almost unnecessarily.
Trubisky also has many question marks to his game. His first start came this junior year and his experience and talent isn’t on the level of Deshaun Watson from Clemson. There also critiques to his game, which is expected to be over a rookie quarterback head, but he’s just not worth being a top 10 pick to most people. He’s ranked as the 12th best player in the draft and not seen as being worthy of the high praise. Most of the praise come from his size and athleticism, so potential is the first word thrown out for him.
The worst part of this is that the Browns just paid $45,000,000 to Buccaneers backup quarterback, Mike Glennon. So now the fans and football people are confused as to why the team is going into this direction.
After the questionable pick, the winners of the draft select Solomon Thomas out of Stanford . Another stud defensive linemen in this class goes to this bare bones team, but after this pick they go on to select Reuben Foster, a linebacker out of Alabama. This guy is said to be the best at that position in this class by some, and to add that with the second ranked D-linemen is an intriguing transaction.
This team is the winner of the draft, because San Francisco fills many holes this draft with player largely on the defensive side of the ball.
At number four the Jacksonville Jaguars add running back Leonard Fournette from LSU. He’s another freak of nature athletically, he stands 6’1, 230 lbs, and clocks in at 4.5 for his forty time. His game in college consisted of downhill running, trucking over players and having the athleticism to juke defenders and make moves.
Corey Davis goes to the Tennessee Titans, number five. This adds a much needed target for Marcus Mariota (Tennessee’s quarterback), and some fire power with his running ability and deep ball catching talent.
New York Jets select Jamal Adams at six and this is a guy that many think will be the best player in the draft. Adams played safety for LSU and is known for his hard hitting, and pass breakups. The upside is built up from the fact that he loves to be in receivers faces and keep a physical play, game in and game out. With improved zone coverage, he could elevate his game to superstar level.
The newly moved, Los Angeles Chargers acquire Mike Williams, the wide receiver from Clemson, number seven. Williams is one of the main reasons the Tigers got to the national championship game and beat Alabama.
His talent stems from his height combined with his speed, and catching ability. Being 6’3 and running a 4’5, makes his versatile as a catcher and is a guy known for grabbing in traffic balls.
With the eighth pick in the draft, the best team makes the best pick of the night. The Carolina Panthers select Christian McCaffrey, running back out of Stanford.
McCaffrey is noted as being the most polished back in the draft, with great agility, cutting ability and catching out of the backfield. His versatility will open up this Panthers offense and will be a big reason to why they return to the Super Bowl in 2018, fingers crossed.
The Cincinnati Bengals create some controversy when they select, running back Joe Mixon from Oklahoma at nine.
Mixon was for years seen as the best running back in college football but in 2014, a video surfaced of him punching a woman in the face. This raised many questions about his character and whether his draft stock would fall. Well the answers are in and it didn’t matter to Sin City.
This is also a eyebrow raiser because the Bengals are known for having players who have character flaws and make bad decisions, and most of that is on the coach Marvin Lewis. Discipline is not something that seems to be preached for this team, so the fact that they picked him is frowned upon.
Number 10, the Chiefs selected the second quarterback in the draft, Patrick Mahomes from Texas Tech. Experts don’t see this as being the best pick this early because his talent doesn’t warrant a top ten pick. Some, like ESPN’s First Take Stephen A. Smith believes they should have taken Deshaun Watson, who better fits what Kansas City’s head coach, Andy Reid would want from a quarterback.
A team who did take Deshaun Watson was the Houston Texans at number twelve, after making a trade with the Browns for that spot. Before the trade happened, many thought the Browns would select Watson, but when the trade occurred, it wa obvious where they were going with their selection. Now the Clemson QB, will be paired up with his previous teammate and now superstar receiver, DeAndre Hopkins.
The draft was full of player going to team where they just needed to go. That’s the most important thing, to make sure the players will be utilized to their full potential and have the best career possible.
Day one through day three are huge for these guys to see where they’ll be living and playing for the next possible ten plus years of their life. All that can be done is to wish them the best of luck and it’s going to be fun to see how some of their careers play out.
