Deidre Ridings became a new member of Chapman’s science department this fall.
This isn’t Ridings’ first time in the building; she is a proud alumna of Chapman. After graduating in 2013, she went to Converse College to study science.
“I really like science. It is my favorite subject and always has been,” Ridings said.
She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Converse College, staying local.
Returning to Chapman wasn’t just about Ridings’ past experiences in the building; she also switched schools to be much closer to home. This allows her to be more involved in her community and give back to her alma mater.
Coming from Dawkins Middle School, Ridings spent many years teaching younger students. After switching to a high school, Ridings says there are major differences between high school and middle school students.
She highlights one of the positives of her now older students.
“I appreciate the responsibility and self-sufficiency of high school students,” she said.
Her students are happy she is at Chapman as well.
After a few weeks in her biology class, sophomore Michael Smith enjoys having her as his teacher.
“She is very nice to my classmates and I,” Smith said. “She’s also very passionate about science.”
Apart from her job at Chapman, Ridings has a plethora of hobbies outside of school. She enjoys many creative activities.
“I enjoy painting miniatures, reading books and playing video games, ” she said.
Along with being very passionate about her job, she also wants to improve her artistic skills and even attends classes to improve her painting.
Ridings is extremely happy to be back in the building where she was once a student. She is very pleased to be surrounded by many familiar faces.
“I’m really enjoying being back at Chapman,” she said. “I have a lot of teachers that were here when I was here to help me, but also lots of new people to meet.”
