The Chapman High School volleyball team is a good environment for all players.
Head Coach Kim LaBoard said that this year, in particular, has been a good year. “There are so many good parts, but I would say the vibe of the team, just from years past, it’s just a different energy in the gym,” she said. “The team is super focused and determined to reach their goals this year.”
This is LaBoard’s first year as head coach, and she has enjoyed it.
“It’s a great group of girls,” she said. “I love going into practice every day. It doesn’t feel like a job.”
Part of LaBoard’s goal is to create an environment where her athletes can be successful.
“I think that we are all in the same mindset,” she said. “We’re trying to chase a ring this season. We’re trying to go far in the playoffs, and I think that everyone who comes into the gym has that mindset as well. I have high standards for them.”
Senior Jami Moss credits the environment created by her coach and her teammates with her love of the sport.
“My favorite thing about volleyball is being able to better myself as an athlete and being around good teammates and just generally being able to have fun with it.”
Moss said that the relationships among the players are special:
“We support each other more than other teams do, and we are really drama free, which is different from most teams.”
