On Sept. 27, Hurricane Helene brought chaos and confusion to our area, leaving lots of damage in its wake.
Even though District One has regained normalcy, the effects are still being seen.
Rearranging previously scheduled school events, like homecoming, has been necessary.
Student council sponsor Brittney Feagan expressed how the organization was able to adjust to these circumstances.
“We are just picking the week up and shifting it,” said Feagan. “The only real challenge we’ve had was trying to sort it around the pre-existing schedule.”
Junior Class President Parker Gramling has been part of this adjustment effort.
“We’re just trying to keep the same plan as much as we can,” said Gramling. “We moved (some things) because we want the seniors and the rest of the school to have the same homecoming feeling, instead of keeping the (events) on a shortened week.”
He, and the rest of the student council, have one goal in mind: increasing school spirit.
“We really want to get the school involved with the football team and the homecoming court, and get (everyone) excited with all the dress-up days and other (activities),” said Gramling.
Events were already planned for the now-homecoming week, such as College Application Day and PSAT testing, so they needed to be included in the adjustment.
Junior Helene Starkey enjoys homecoming week because of her extracurricular involvement.
“I’m a little bit biased because I’m a band kid, but our band performance is always my favorite,” said Starkey. “I like being able to show (off) my talent to everybody, even if it’s a group effort.”
In addition, junior Preslee Taylor because of her role as a yearbook staff member.
“One thing I enjoy most about homecoming is the football game,’ said Taylor. “I get to be down there, take pictures, and (really) be a part of the experience.”
Being part of the experience is exactly what student council is attempting, according to Feagan.
“Our goal is to get morale up,” said Feagan. “We want (Chapman) to be a place that the student body enjoys coming to and is not miserable every day.”
