On Jan. 7, Chapman began enforcing the “Free To Focus” cell phone policy on students. This ban started once we returned to school after Christmas break.
But what about implementing the cell phone policy for teachers? That should happen.
The first reason is that “Free To Focus” doesn’t allow students to access their phones during school hours. You have to put your phone up from bell to bell, hallways and lunch. It doesn’t seem fair to us students that teachers do not have to put their devices away.
Teachers shouldn’t be allowed to be on their devices if they are here to work and teach us students.
The second reason is that teachers have many ways to contact staff during the day. They have phone lines, email and walkie-talkies. Still, teachers have their phones out all the time; even if they aren’t on them they have them on their desks, their hands and in their pockets.
When teachers have their phones out, it influences students to get on their phones. It also makes students feel that it is okay to have them out leading them into getting in trouble. If teachers aren’t allowed to be on their phones, students wouldn’t feel obligated to get on theirs.
According to the South Carolina Legislatures, a law has been introduced to the South Carolina Senate that would address this, prohibiting the use of devices from students and employees.
This means that anyone in possession of a wireless or technology suffers the consequences just like students
We hope that this ban takes effect and keeps devices from teachers, just as the current ban keeps devices from us.
