Head boys basketball coach Jared St. Charles and freshman point guard Caden St. Charles are a dynamic father son duo on and off the court.
Caden and his dad’s basketball relationship first started in 2014, when he was four years old.
“Ever since I was a little kid I’ve been around it,” Caden St. Charles said.
Both explained that they had always looked forward to being on the court together.
“It’s something that we’ve always kind of always hoped would be able to happen in my coaching career,” Jared St. Charles said. “I’ve been coaching for a long time and he’s been playing basketball for a while, so yes, I’ve been waiting for that to happen.”
They not only have a strong father son relationship on the court, but also a very close relationship at home. Basketball helps them to be able to understand each other better both mentally and emotionally.
“He also knows when I get frustrated and he gets frustrated so we’re on the same page,” Jared St. Charles said.
Although having his dad as a coach has some perks, it also has some downsides, Caden St. Charles said.
“I would say, yeah (it’s), because we live in the same household and he is always just going to be pushing me harder than other people because I’m his child,” Caden St. Charles said.
Even though they are family there is no favoritism when it comes to the court.
“(Coach St. Charles) treats us all the same,” sophomore Grayden Humphries said.
Still, the bond between the St. Charles guys is clear.
“I feel like they may have a little more chemistry between son and father, and I feel like he trusts him in a lot of situations, but that’s just because it’s his son,” junior Jamie LeMaster said.
To Caden St. Charles, working together on the court is helpful.
“Overall, we don’t have a bad relationship, and basketball makes it stronger,” Caden St. Charles said.
