Ranking Super Bowl LII’s best commercials

Every year families and friends gather around the tv to watch one of the most anticipated events in sports: The Super Bowl. The game is a tradition since 1967 and one of the highlights, minus the game and the halftime show, is the many commercials that are broadcasted. From the always hilarious Doritos commercials to the Budweiser Commercials with the recognizable Clydesdales, the commercials are always synonymous with the big game.

2018 is no different, and Super Bowl 52 had a wide variety of commercials ranging from laugh-out-loud to more heartwarming to watch. Some were there for jokes, others called for equality and some looked back and honored the history of the product they were advertising.

Now I’m counting down my top five Super Bowl LII commercials.

  1. Jeep Jurassic Park Commercial

Every year with the Super Bowl we are guaranteed a car commercial of some sort from anyone and this year Jeep brought something that was 65 million years in the making. The commercial targeted fans of Jurassic Park by not only showing a scene from the original but then updating it to Jeff Goldblum driving a new 2018 Jeep instead of the classic from the film. The commercial is nothing mind blowing but using the nostalgia of that classic film, Jeep stampeded into the 5th spot.

  1. M&M’s ‘Human’

Ever wondered what the red M&M would look like as a human? No, well M&M’s answered that question for everyone with this funny commercial starring Danny DeVito as the candy turned human. The M&M’s have been staples of commercials for a long time and this commercial is another fantastic addition to the catalog of previous laughs. The idea of Danny DeVito playing a humanoid M&M is crazy, but this commercial accomplishes that and makes you laugh and crave that sweet chocolate taste that M&M’s have. ‘Human’ takes the number 4 spot

  1. NFL- Touchdown Celebrations to Come

For another instance in which the commercial is playing on nostalgia, the NFL channeled Patrick Swayze for this one. The spot shows Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. practicing then they start to reenact the dance scene from Dirty Dancing, yes even the famous lift. The commercial again targets one’s nostalgia for the famous scene but parodies it with something unexpected: two football players. It made me laugh and sing along with Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes and that is why this commercial dances its way to number 3.

  1. Pepsi-”This is the Pepsi”

Pepsi honored their own history in this ad. Using callbacks from past commercials such as Cindy Crawford and scenes of Michael Jackson and Britney Spears allowed people to feel nostalgic for the ads of old. The ad targeted people’s nostalgia with not just the celebrities but also with scenes such as a DeLorean going back to the future with a refreshing Pepsi. The ad not only uses those endorsements but also says that the Pepsi you drink now is the same one your dad drank and your grandpa drank, showing that the tradition of a Pepsi lives on.

1.DORITOS BLAZE vs MTN DEW ICE

The best commercial of the night was from the kings of Super Bowl commercials: Doritos. The ad opens with Peter Dinklage lip-syncing “Look At Me Now” while the entire room erupts into flames and we even get to see Busta Rhymes himself as a painting. The Doritos part of the ad ends with Dinklage spitting fire and the bag of Doritos Blaze but then ice forms on the bag and we see the man, the myth, the legend Morgan Freeman with a bottle of Mountain Dew Ice. Freeman contrasted with Dinklage is surrounded by ice and he lip-syncs “Get Your Freak On” with Missy Elliot appearing as an image as well. The ad is fun, and seeing Dinklage and Freeman square off and lip-sync is hilarious. Now I’m craving a Mountain Dew and some Doritos.
