Chapman offers many sports, but one they do not provide is dancing.
Many students take dance classes outside of school.
Senior Ella Hollis dances at StarMakers Dance Company in Inman.
Hollis started dancing 15 years ago.
“My mom danced all her life, so she kind of threw me into it when I was really young,” she said.
The hours are intense: She practices three days a week and competes four times per year.
Last year, she placed first in a regional competition and has also been honored with awards through her studio including Most Outstanding Jazz Performer.
“I love doing it, and I can’t imagine doing any other sport,” Hollis said.
Junior Seren Stanton also dances at Star Makers, and like Hollis, she started dance at a young age when her mother put her in class.
The twist?
Stanton’s mother owns the studio.
“(My mom being the owner) is positive and negative,” Stanton said. “It’s nice because I can practice whenever I want.”
She has also won many awards, such as a high-scoring solo at a competition last year.
Stanton’s best friend, junior Gracie Greenway also dances at StarMakers.
Greenway started dancing because Stanton’s mom suggested it.
“I’ve loved it ever since,” Greenway said.
Although dancing takes a lot of time and hard work, they are still able to do other things.
Greenway is able to balance her time and do dancing and golfing.
“I kind of have to squish them together,” she said.
Even though it’s difficult to manage time because of dance, Greenway still loves it.
“Every season is different,” she said. “I always have to push myself each year.”
