In September, Hurricane Helene tore through North and South Carolina, leaving behind destroyed areas and closed schools.
Chapman was closed for six days. The first day was an e-learning day, but the remaining five were complete closures due to power outages and school buildings being used for meals and showers. H. 3778, introduced on Jan. 16, is currently in the South Carolina House. It would allow districts to waive the missed days.
Despite purported support from local politicians, the bill appears stalled.
Principal Matt Davis said that the district currently uses teacher workdays to make up the time.
February 14 was an e-learning day, and March 14 will be the same. Other discussed options include returning to school after Memorial Day or offering an e-learning day on a Saturday or over spring break.
