This month, Chapman is celebrating Black History Month.
Diversity Council leader Cassey McKown said that celebrating this month is important.
“I think (Black History Month) is important for everyone, because we all benefit from Black culture, especially being from the South,” she said. “It’s important, and it’s also just kind of a reminder of our history and how we can continue to improve every single year.”
Senior Shy’Asia Lyles, a member of the Diversity Council, agrees that it’s important to recognize Black History Month throughout the school.
”I think it’s really important that the school especially does Black history because it’s not as diverse as other areas,” Lyles said. “It’s good for people to learn about (Black) history and everything it comes with.”
This year for Black History Month, Diversity Council is hosting a door-decorating contest.
In addition to the in-school activities, Diversity Council is hosting an after-school assembly that consists of food trucks, guest speakers and other schools. Diversity Council is excited because holding it after school will allow the entire community to participate.
The assembly takes place Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium.
