Now that the curtain has closed for “Descendants: The Musical,” theatre seniors and their teacher are reflecting on the last four years.
For seniors, theatre is a second home. Senior Shy’Asia Lyles has been participating in theatre since her freshman year and has created many memories as a theatre student.
“I found a family here and always come to (teacher Carrie) Ponder’s class and have my people here that love and support me,” she said
Senior Jamison Matthews said that being a part of theatre has been an amazing experience for him.
“Since I took theatre, it’s taken me out of my comfort zone and helped me meet new, amazing people,” he said.
Lyles and Matthews were primarily known for their roles on stage, but theatre requires people backstage as well. One of those is senior Emmalee Flake.
Flake was a stage manager and helped run multiple productions.
“My favorite part about working behind the scenes is hearing the audience react to our shows and gives me a big wave of excitement, because I joined theatre to make people happy and create a show where people feel joy,” said Flake.
Matthews said that he would encourage people to pursue theatre if they’re interested.
“If you’re interested in theater, you should go for it,” he said. “You’re gonna have so much fun if you let yourself get into a role without taking it seriously.”
