Marching towards madness
It is the time of the year that all college basketball followers love and worship. It is time for 68 teams to duke it out and fight for the NCAA Championship.
March Madness began in 1939 and only involved eight teams. It is safe to say that the tournament has greatly expanded since then.
So far, UCLA has the most NCAA tournament championships with 11.
In last year’s tournament, UNC edged out Gonzaga to win the championship by a score of 71-65.
This year should be a very interesting tournament due to the number of teams that seem to be unstoppable. Virginia, Michigan State, Xavier and Villanova all are very hard to beat this season.
There has already been many thriller games and buzzer-beaters in the regular season, which means that the tournament will be that much more exciting.
But in March Madness, you never know when a lower seeded team comes to the tournament with their ducks in a row and is ready to complete some upsets.
The thing about college basketball that is different from football is the fact that a smaller school such as Rhode Island or St. Mary’s actually has a chance to win the championship.
In football, 80 percent of the teams know before the start of the season that they have no chance of winning the championship, while I feel that 80 percent of teams in college basketball go into the season knowing that they have a chance to bring home a title. That is the thing that makes basketball very interesting and fun to keep up with.
Another fun aspect of college basketball is the brackets in which you can fill out and follow to see how close your picks were to the actual game.
The tournament starts on March 13 and will conclude with the championship on April 2 in San Antonio. So be sure to tune in to CBS, TBS, TNT and TruTV and download the March Madness app on your phone so you don’t miss any of the action.
