District 1 Superintendent Dr. Ron Garner, Chapman Principal Ty Dawkins and Assistant Principal Andrew McMillan receive plaque from South Carolina Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman at Palmetto Center in Columbia, SC on Monday morning.

At the beginning of the year Chapman put in an application for South Carolina’s most prestigious award, Palmetto’s Finest.

The application led to a site visit, which led to another site visit, which led to an auditorium filled with seniors, juniors, teachers, administrators and guests, all watching a press conference held by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.

South Carolina State Superintendent Molly Spearman read the news, and when she did, the entire auditorium erupted into cheers as she named Chapman High School the 2017-2018 Palmetto’s Finest High School.

Winning prestigious award speaks highly of the principal-approved “teachin’ and learnin’” that occurs daily at Chapman High School.

Some attendees exchanged hugs, shook hands and cried; some chanted chants of congratulations; some remained speechless. One of those was Principal Ty Dawkins.

“It has been a while since I’ve been speechless, but I’m speechless right now,” Dawkins said. “I feel incredible. I’m super proud, not only for the school and students, but also for the community.”

Congratulations, Panther Nation. It’s a great day to be a panther!
