Landon Ash as the beast

In March of 2017, Disney brought Beauty and the Beast back to the big screen, pleasing everyone with the vibrant colors, outstanding music, actors and actresses that fit each part perfectly and important messages that can be applied to a variety of people’s lives.

This year, Chapman’s theatre department decided to bring the beauty to our school by putting on a production of Beauty and the Beast, and it is nothing less than spectacular.

Sitting in the audience, I was captured by the many different characters, music, colors and costumes gracing the stage.

Belle, beautifully played by Senior Kayla Hall, incorporates the perfect amount of sass towards Gaston while still maintaining the sweet and loving qualities that the Beast falls in love with. Landon Ash immerses himself as the Beast so well that, along with the outstanding costume, the audience forget he’s an actual person. Gaston’s arrogant character and prideful stature are played perfectly by Senior Skyler Dunning and each staple object, including Mrs. Potts, Chip, Lumiere, Cogsworth and Babette the Feather Duster embrace their inanimate objects’ qualities while bringing them to life so vibrantly.

The challenging choreography and music are handled gracefully, and each small part — villagers in “Belle”, spoons and forks in “Be Our Guest” and Silly Girls in “Gaston” — work together to create the full experience for the audience.

Chapman’s production of Beauty and the Beast is, in my opinion, one of the best plays performed on that stage, and I encourage everyone to make the time to go see it. The showtimes include Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m., as well as a Saturday matinee at 2:00 p.m. and tickets are $10 at the door.
