Most high school students work toward earning their driver’s license, and Chapman offers a driver’s education course as part of its curriculum.
The course is taught by Kevin Carr, who said taking driver’s education through the school is a more affordable option than private programs, though it can take more time.
“Some people can’t afford a private driving class. Some people can,” Carr said. “But the normal cost is just lower.”
Driver’s education is offered both semesters and spans four class blocks. Because of high enrollment, it can take longer for Carr to work individually with every student.
The class itself is worth a half credit. To earn a full credit, students must also complete a virtual lab.
The virtual lab is taught by Ricky Pace, who helps students earn the additional half credit needed.
“So we’ll take another half credit equal to the one credit everybody else gets,” Pace said.
After students complete and pass the course, Carr issues the paperwork required for the permit driving portion. Students may complete the driving test with a designated instructor or take their paperwork to the DMV to test there.
Sophomore William McCraw said taking driver’s education through the school made the experience more enjoyable.
“One reason, of course, is Coach Carr. He’s a great guy,” McCraw said. “Especially when you have friends in the class and get to do things like drive with them.”
