Last year marked the inaugural Unity in the Community, and the event will return this year on Feb. 24.
At 6 p.m. in the auditorium, Chapman students and Inman community members will come together to celebrate Black History Month.
Teacher Sundra Proctor-Smith has coordinated the event. It will include multiple chorus performances from schools across the district, a speaker and other performances and readings from the fine arts and other organizations. The Black History Month poem winners will also be recognized.
“It’s designed to be a meaningful, positive and engaging program for all in attendance,” Proctor-Smith said.
Junior Lola Hoss, a student in the public speaking class, will be one of the students presenting.
“I’m very excited to have this opportunity to celebrate culture and perform public speaking in front of an audience for the first time,” Hoss said.
Proctor-Smith believes that Unity in the Community is more than just an assembly.
“Unity in the Community isn’t something we talk about at an assembly,” she said. “It’s something we show every day by how we treat each other. Every student plays an important part in building a positive school community. We hope to see everyone there.”
