Due to two winter storms, students missed six days of school. Five of those days were e-learning.
The district allows only five e-learning days per year. As a result, schools were completely closed for one additional day.
March 6, originally scheduled as a teacher workday, will now be a makeup day for students.
“I think that it’s the right decision,” Assistant Principal Carrie Forrest said. “I think it’s best for students to try to regain some of that time.”
While e-learning days can be helpful, both Forrest and Principal Matt Davis believe traditional, in-person school days are more beneficial for students.
“I don’t think students are getting the same benefits as they do when they’re in the building,” Forrest said.
“I’m not willing to risk traditional days being here for e-learning days,” Davis said. “I’m a firm believer in traditional, come-to-school days.”
Davis also believes it is better to make up school in March rather than in May after testing.
“If you try to make up days after the end of the semester, what are we doing?” Davis said.
A makeup day in March will help students prepare for important tests and exams.
Students have mixed feelings about the change. Freshman Ariana Brian sees a positive side.
“The makeup day is definitely needed,” Brian said. “We don’t want to get behind on our work. And if we miss a lot of school, it will just keep piling up.”
