A week of CFB upsets

This past week in college football was full of upsets. Most of these games were expected to be blowouts and ended up falling in the hands of the lower-ranked team. Although upsets are not unusual, this many in one day is certainly odd. But then again, it is college football and anything can happen. These upsets leave fans questioning whether or not their playoff hopes are still alive.

No. 2 Georgia loses to No. 13 LSU

This game is considered the biggest upset of the weekend, but, in my opinion, LSU deserved to be a top 5 team way before this game. Georgia has been very idle the past couple of weeks, struggling on offensive production, leaning on the defense being the only thing keeping them in the game. LSU just simply came to this game more prepared and ready to play. The Tigers had a very strong balance between the pass and run game with quarterback Joe Burrow rushing for two touchdowns. Although they had one hiccup being a close loss to Florida, I feel that they have come back even stronger than before. Look for LSU to still be looming around when playoff time comes, especially if they can topple No. 1 Alabama. As for Georgia, if they do not find some kind of stability soon, they will find themselves slipping out of the playoff picture. It would require a marquee win like a victory in the SEC championship game.

No. 6 WVU loses to Iowa State

This game was much more surprising considering Iowa State was 2-3 facing a strong and undefeated Mountaineers team. Will Grier was not able to produce his big plays through the air like normally, and I think this was due to the offensive line not protecting him and giving him enough time to get rid of the ball. The Iowa State defense did a great job forcing punts and keeping them out of the end zone. I do not think WVU has all the pieces in line right now to sustain being a top 10 team. It is going to be really tough for them to have a shot at making the playoffs after this one.

No. 8 Penn State loses to Michigan State

Here is a game I feel that not many people saw coming. Penn State had been dominating every team they played until a heartbreaking one-point loss to Ohio State. I figured they would bounce back and resume winning big in orderly fashion. There isn’t much to discuss in detail about the game. Penn State simply got outplayed and never showed up for the game. QB Trace McSorley was kept at bay and never found any kind of rhythm in their game. I do think that Penn State will regain their fame again this week versus Indiana. As for their playoff chances, the door is still open for Penn State to make it if they can prove that this was merely a fluke game.

No. 7 Washington loses to No. 17 Oregon

This was an upset I saw coming. Oregon has really been on a hot streak the past couple weeks, and an overtime win over Washington further seals that case. This win moves them up to the No. 12 spot and a win over No. 25 Washington State this weekend would put them in the top 10. For Washington, this loss pretty much extinguishes any kind of hopes they had for making the playoffs this year. Oregon, on the other hand, has a legitimate shot at making it if they continue showing they can hang with top 10 teams. The only takeaway is their strength of schedule. They will need to win out the rest of the games and be the Pac-12 champs in order to secure a chance when the committee comes together.

Other notable games include No. 16 Miami losing to Virginia, and No. 21 Auburn losing to Tennessee.
