College Knowledge: Newberry College
Located in Newberry County, South Carolina, Newberry College is a liberal arts school that offers 33 majors and 27 minors.
Academically, Newberry takes pride in being the number 12 best college in the South, but also boasts of their “rich tradition of providing personal attention.”
One notable alumnus is our very own principal, Dr. McMillan. He speaks highly of his professors and his relationships with them. He had professors that were hard on him, but in the end, they helped him towards where he is now and really inspired him.
“My junior year at Newberry, I had an education professor that really just set me on fire about what I wanted to do. She really challenged me to be professional, to know what it means to work with kids and adults,” McMillan said.
McMillan already knew he wanted to go into education, and a Teaching Fellows scholarship was what initially sent him to Newberry. After taking a tour of the school, he knew it was right for him: “Walking around, it really reminded me a lot of Chapman; it reminded me of that hometown feel,” McMillan said. The town of Newberry is pretty quiet, but it’s only about 30 minutes from Columbia, so it’s not hard to find something to do.
Newberry’s athletics include a wide variety of sports, ranging from lacrosse to football to golf. Even our former star quarterback, Colton Bailey, was recruited last year to play for the Newberry Wolves. There are ten sports for both males and females; you can find more about those on their Athletics website.
The tuition for the 2018-19 school year is $24,174, and housing costs for Brokaw Hall, the primary residence hall for freshmen, is $5,600 a year. Board is $5,066.
