As a music lover, I spend most of my time looking for new music, and this year I discovered became obsessed with so many new artists. Here are my top five songs of the year:
5.) Alec Benjamin, “If We Have Each Other”
Alec Benjamin refers to his songs as “stories”, and “If We Have Each Other” has been one of my favorite stories that he’s released. The story was written for Benjamin’s sister and it goes into detail about three of the different types of love that he has gotten to witness in his life. He is one of the few artists that can consistently get better and better with each release. Benjamin is an artist to keep your eye on because he is definitely going places in 2019.
4.) Lauv, “Getting Over You”
Lauv made a strong debut this year with the release of his first album, so it’s hard to pick just one of the songs to justify just how good the album is. In typical Lauv fashion, the song paints such a vivid picture that connects him with his audience.
3.) LANY, “I Don’t Wanna Love You Anymore”
LANY was one of my favorite bands of the year, and upon hearing their album “Malibu Nights” I knew that this song was going to be one of my favorites. The band successfully makes an upbeat, happy song while reminiscing on former heartbreak.
2.) John Mayer, “New Light”
This was Mayer’s first release since his album “The Search for Everything” which was released in April of 2017. This song is creative and genius, but I expect nothing less from Mayer. It was definitely part of my summer soundtrack, and I still listen to it on repeat.
1.) Bleachers, “Alfie’s Song (Not So Typical Love Song)”
Bleachers is the stage name for Jack Antonoff, who was a former member of the band “Fun.” “Alfie Song” has been one of my favorite songs this year, and one of my go-to Bleachers songs. Antonoff is admirable in the way that he does his own thing with his music and doesn’t stick to what’s currently looked for in a song, and that’s what really made me fall in love with his music.
