Basketball gains the region, preparing for playoffs

Senior Brandon Fortenberry-Smith

Boy’s basketball faced Chesnee Tuesday night in a game that determined the region champion.

The game was not dominated by either team, and was very close throughout its entirety. The Eagles would come out of the locker room after halftime to take a 50-43 lead. However, this was not enough to prevent the Panthers from clawing back.

After a time out to calm them down, the Panthers gained a 61-60 lead thanks to a three-pointer by Mikele Colasurdo and Brandon Fortenberry drawing a foul. The Panthers never trailed after this point and held on to victory in the end by a score of 81-75, claiming the AAA Region Championship.

This is the second region championship for Panthers basketball in 22 years. They finished region season with a 5-3 record and had a highlight victory over 5A Gaffney by a commanding score of 60-45.

Although this is a great accomplishment, this is not the end of the road for the team. It’s now time to prepare and push through playoffs.

The guys will take on Clinton here at Chapman in the first round playoff game on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. They played Clinton this season back in November when they edged them by a score of 79-73.

Not only did the guys make their mark in the region, but the women fought hard throughout their season as well. With a region record of 6-2 and after a final 76-60 win against Chesnee High School, they finished second in the region — therefore earning a spot in playoffs.

The girls will play here at Chapman on Monday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. vs Union.

Bring your friends and family to fill up the gym to try and help lead our Panthers to victory on both Monday and Tuesday night. Be sure to wear as much navy and orange as possible for Spirit Night!
