Reflections on a pandemic education
This school year has been completely different from any other. Because of the coronavirus, we have had to do many things differently.
We started off the year only going two days a week with half of the students in the building. I liked this because there were fewer people and with smaller classes, the teacher could help us more. It was a lot quieter at lunch, in class, and in the hallways.
This was also good because on the days we didn’t have school I could get my work done fast and then have the rest of the day to workout, clean the house, go places and watch shows.
The downside to this was not being able to learn as well because we only had a teacher teaching us for two days, and usually, we would use those for our tests, so we had to try to learn some things at home. We didn’t get as much information or learn things as in-depth as we would have in regular school.
When we started going every other Wednesday, at first I didn’t like it because I enjoyed being at home and it was hard to remember which week I had school and when I didn’t. After a while, I got used to it and it wasn’t that bad.
Then we started going five days a week, like we used to, except it isn’t really the same. The school had plexiglass installed around all of the desks. This makes it hard to communicate with people and see the board.
In many of my classes we have had to do work with people around us, but with the plexiglass and masks on it is very hard to understand what anyone is saying. When the whole class is talking at one time and you can’t try to read lips it’s almost impossible to understand what your partner is saying. I’ve seen many people have to write it down on paper and show it to their partner.
Lunch is another thing that is very different now. We now have four lunches instead of three meaning there is a good chance you won’t have the same lunch as your friends.
The chairs and tables are all spread out, and some have plastic dividers in between.
We have to wear a mask all day now which isn’t my favorite thing either.
Going from two days a week to five days a week was a big change. It is much louder and crowded in the hallways. It used to take me two minutes to get from class to the parking lot at the end of the day, but now it takes me at least five because of all the crowds of people.
It also takes longer to get out of the school once in your car. I used to be able to drive straight out, but now there is a long line of cars and it takes longer to get home.
The good thing about going every day is being able to learn better. An extra three days of school makes it a lot easier to learn everything you need to know and to have less work to do at home.
Even though we are going five days a week now it still isn’t like it used to be; although, I am getting used to it more every day.
