Hating Christian Laettner, loving his story

In the ‘92 Elite Eight game between Kentucky and Duke,  Aminu Timberlake took a fall. He never suspected the size 17 shoe to meet his chest.

For some it was a foul; to others it was another reason to hate the owner of the shoes: Christian Laettner.

Laettner is the subject of ESPN’s newest “30 for 30.”

“I Hate Christian Laettner” chronicles the massive hatred of the Duke Basketball star while he played. The film shows why people hated Laetnner and the effect it had on him. They had five reasons why people hated him: Privilege, Being White, Bully, Greatness and Looks.

The film shows how each of these affected Laettner and shows that he was not rich but came from a blue collar family. I enjoyed how the film showed that people loved or hated a villain and Laettner was the villain people wanted to hate. I rate “I Hate Christian Laettner” a five stars out of five.

The documentary is another in a long line of success for the “30 for 30” franchise. I love the “30 for 30″s for merging two of my favorite things film and sports. The films are superb in telling a range of stories and things you would not commonly know.

My favorites are “Brian and the Boz” about the career of Brian Bosworth and how fame destroyed his career; “Bad Boys” which tells the tale of the 1990 Detroit Pistons Basketball team and their brutality when it came to playing the game; and “Survive and Advance” the story of the NC State Wolfpack and their fight to win the National Championship,

The films are great for sports fans as well as film fans that enjoy documentaries. “No Mas,” “Ghosts of Ole Miss,” “Broke,” “Benji” and “9.79*”. The films are great and show stories that normal fans of sports would not know.

I enjoy these films because of the diverse library of stories and tales. If you want to find some of these films they are streaming on Netflix Watch Instantly.
