“Insurgent” diverges from good quality
Of all the book adaptations I was looking forward to seeing, “Insurgent” was one I was excited for. I had read the book and was ecstatic when the series was announced as a film series. The first film “Divergent” was an okay film but I hoped the sequel would be better; sadly, I set my expectations too high.
The movie is bad, but I found a few things that were good and that I liked. First, the two best characters in the film are Peter played by Miles Teller and Eric played by Jai Courtney. Courtney is hilarious because he plays his character like a 80s action villain, and he is just so mad and evil that it is ridiculous. Teller, who is one of my favorite actors, is comedy gold being a jerk to everyone and saying quips to make fun of characters.
Another thing I loved was the effects of the serums that they tested on divergents; they looked fantastic almost a cross between the Matrix and a video game.
Now for my laundry list of complaints for this movie.
First the main idea of the film is trying to get a box back from Jeanine (Kate Winslet). This is weird because in the book there never was a box but a secret message, I hate when films add some mysterious or special item to find a secret.
Then there is the romance of Tris and Four, this relationship is worse than the “Twilight” film’s relationship and that is saying something. Many of these young adult novels have to have a relationship and they fail miserably at it. Then there are the other actors who look like they are zombies or sleepwalking through the film, saying their lines like a robot with no emotion. Also I thought that Naomi Watts who is supposed to play Four’s mother looked the exact same age and it just creeped me out during a scene when Tris wakes up and sees Watts sitting at the foot of the bed saying she likes watching Four sleep.
“Insurgent” is an example of what is wrong with book adaptations and this is why I am getting tired of young adult adaptations. I love reading and I hate seeing some of my favorite books being ruined by bad movies. “Insurgent” is a bad movie with some bright spots but that cannot save it from getting a rating of 1 star out of 5.
