Is physical activity as punishment okay in the classroom?

Physical activity such as running laps, push-ups, and sit-ups as punishment is not the ideal course of action for certain complications. Some complications could be tardies, disrespect, cell phones. Teachers should not endorse running, push-ups and sit-ups on students that cause an inconvenience.

Depending on what the student has done to cause an inconvenience, the teacher should determine what is the proper punishment. If the student is being disrespectful towards the teacher, then the proper punishment might be to send the office. If the student is tardy, make them stay after school one day. Taking cell phones until the end of class if they are on them after being told not to. Physical punishment could lead to the student becoming a bigger inconvenience than they previously had been.

Ideally, physical activity should be used as an award, not as a punishment. Due to using physical activity as a punishment and not as an award, we start to become less stimulated to do physical activities. We’ve always presumed them as negative actions and not positive actions.
