Is Turning Red appropriate for Disney?
“Turning Red” takes place in Toronto, Canada 2002. Meilin Lee is the main character, who ends up turning into a red panda. The reason she turns into a panda is that her family has a secret that causes them to turn into pandas with strong emotions.
This movie is all about the coming of age of a 13-year-old girl. The movie has some great repetition to many diversities. It shows different religions, races, and types of diabetes.
Some scenes may be a little much for young viewers. In one scene, Meilin is doing homework when she starts to draw a guy she saw at the store, which leads to her drawing them together with his shirt off while holding her. Meilin is 13 years old and a minor, and the guy from the store is 19 years old, which is illegal due to minors’ safety.
Overall, this movie is great for Disney mainly because Disney is changing to fit every age group. This movie should be rated PG-13 other than PG due to scenes. The scenes that should make this movie PG-13 are when she is fantasizing about a band that she is in love with and when she is drawing herself with the guy from the store. Nonetheless, if you don’t mind weird drawings and fantasies of a 13-year-old girl, this movie is perfect for Disney.
