Beta Club provides an opportunity for service

Students who get good grades and wish to serve others should consider joining the Beta Club.

Math teacher Ann Margaret McClary and social studies teacher Fara Stewart are the club’s sponsors.

“Beta Club is a service organization that honors high achieving students,” McClary said.

“The mission of Beta Club is to promote academic achievement, character, service and leadership among high school students,” Stewart said.

This mission fits alongside the club’s motto: “Let Us Lead by Serving Others.”

Beta Club works alongside different organizations in the community. For example, the club has helped Greater Spartanburg Ministries, the Spartanburg Humane Society, the Children’s Advocacy Center, the Carolina Pregnancy Center and Relay for Life. In the past, the club has also helped serve Thanksgiving meals to the homeless.

Every month, the club selects a new project.

“This year our officers have expressed a desire to be more active in the community, participating in hands on service projects,” Stewart said. “We hope to actually go into the community and make a difference.”

Junior Riley Cook has participated in projects for Beta Club.

“I have gone to meetings and brought in service items including shampoo, bottles, canned food and more,” Cook said.

Junior Alyssa Cody said becoming a member made her feel intelligent.

“It made me feel at the top of my class and much smarter,” Cody said.

Cooks feels that she has learned a lot from being in Beta Club, but one skill sticks out.

“I think Beta Club is a good way to learn responsibility,” Cook said.

Members and future members have so many reasons to join this organization.

“Beta Club celebrates academic achievement and membership looks really good on a college applications, but there is so much more to Beta,” Stewart said. “We attempt to create good leaders by encouraging student selected service projects. Beta membership allows students to help others, serve our school community and become role models for younger students.”

“They’re given the opportunity to give back to the community through service work,” McClary said.

Beta Club can also help students pay for college.

“Beta Club sponsors $300,000 in college scholarships for senior members each year,” Stewart said.
