Puffs: The Harry Potter Spin-Off Taking Chapman’s Stage by Storm
From Oct. 6-8 Harry Potter magic is being brought to the Chapman stage with a new lens: a Harry Potter play called “Puffs” that is all about the Hufflepuffs.
The Hufflepuff house is a group of wizard students who are “kind and patient.”
In other words, Hufflepuffs tend to be portrayed as the ‘extra’ house or “unnecessary.”
The Hufflepuffs tend to be underrepresented in the media because of this.
This new play is going to change that. “Puffs” is a funny spinoff play of Harry Potter that gives Hufflepuffs – or Puffs – the representation they deserve.
“Well, it’s a lovely show with wonderful actors and amazing backstage crew,” said Emmalee Flake, assistant stage manager. “The show illustrates the funnier adventures in Harry Potter.”
“Puffs” also focuses on the comedic side of the Harry Potter stories. It highlights the ludicracy of Hogwarts – the stairs MOVE? – and dives deeper into the Hufflepuffs’ point of view.
Viewers will also get introspect on how Puffs feel when they go through an entire school year in mortal danger because of Harry Potter, who in this show is quite arrogant and annoying. Wayne Hopkins, the main character, mainly focuses on this.
“(I think he feels) angry, because he wants to be the hero and Harry takes that away,” said Juno Laws, who is playing Wayne. “I think I even say that in the play at one point.”
The actors in this play are currently working hard nearly every day at rehearsals and set-builds, trying to make the show the best it can be. There are two days until opening, which will be a day show for Campobello-Gramling School. This means later hours for the high school and middle school actors, all to make the play the best it can be.
“It’s amazing!” said seventh-grader Rebecca Painter, who plays ‘Lord Voldemort’ and ‘the first Headmaster’ in the show. “We’re getting through act one now, (and) it just shows that we want to make this perfect for the audience. Because progress to me is measured in how well you think about the audience and how well you better yourself by working at home.”
No doubt about it, Puffs is going to be a hilarious, magical sensation.
